Poker is any of many card games where players wager on the outcome of a set of cards, usually in terms of the highest card (called the “high card”) and the lowest card (the “low card”). Poker was popular in Europe for centuries and is now played around the world. The most well-known versions of poker are Texas Holdem and Omaha Poker. There are variations of each of these games where the high cards are known as the Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and Deuce, while the low cards are called the King Jack, Ace Deuce, Queen Jack, or just the Jack. Poker is also sometimes called Seven Card Stud or Seven Card Cheat because some versions involve you having seven cards, although the basic rules of poker apply to any game of poker, including seven-card stud.
When playing seven-card stud with regular poker rules, the tableau consists of seven cards. These are placed face down on the table in position according to the position of the Ace and King, or Ace King Jack. Some seven-card stud games have the Ace King Jack in the same spot, but with only the King and Queen being turned over. You may draw poker by having all the high cards turned over, or by having the King and Queen face up.
In seven-card stud, the object is to make the best possible combination of cards by getting the best hand, and then betting that your hand will win. The players must make their bets before all the cards are dealt. If at any point during the game a player bets with more cards than there are available, that player forfeits the hand and can no longer bet.
The objective in a seven-card stud poker game is to “pot” or” expose” the best hand. A pot is a term meaning “to hold in the pot”. When you are holding in the pot you are paying out less than your hand would potentially earn. “Expose” is different than “pot” because in a seven-card stud poker game a player is only dealt a single card face up. That player is not obligated to reveal his cards; he or she may simply keep them within their cards so that they have the option of playing with them and then picking them up if they win. Revealing your cards gives away part of the advantage you have over your opponent, and it takes away from your potential to show your best hand.
In a community card game (PCG) where there are two or more pre-flop dealers, players must draw from a common initial pot. The first three pre-flop cards that are dealt face up are not the draw. The players may choose to stay in the pot and take the remaining pre-flop cards face up, or they may choose to draw from the pot.
If the last two pre-flop cards that are dealt face up are the highest ranking cards in the pot (in terms of the highest hand), then those players are the winners. The players who lose have lost the pot no matter what their hands were, and in most poker games the multi-table Stud Poker is played between those with the highest pre-flop equity. When multi-table stud is played, each table becomes a competition between the players with the highest pre-flop equity. Players who have higher pre-flop equity than their opponents are more likely to stay in the game and play until there is a winner. Stud Poker is a fast action poker game where pre-flop strategy plays an important role.
